Since the 1940s, I have been seeing many Daoist (or Taoist) masters who act as media between God (or the gods) and people, and they scarify themselves with Sha-Yu-Jian (鯊魚劍,a saw-like sword that made from a sawfish, either narrow sawfish or large tooth sawfish) or Ding-Qiu (釘球,a ball mounted with many nails with the sharp points outwardly), in order to bring God’s or the gods’ blessing to people. They used to injure themselves, especially their backs and heads, and even caused a stroke as a result. How could their sacrifices bring people with happiness and fortune? Now, let me share you with one of the case history as following.

In early 1980s, before I immigrated to America, a patient (Mr. Wang) had requested me to check his parents’ house and its surroundings, the so-called Feng-Shui (風水); for they were sick so often without any reasonable causes. It took us about 40 minutes to get there, Qi-Shan (旗山), by his motorcycle. The Feng-Shui was fine, except a little bit too humid. Then we went to visit two temples, a Buddhist temple at San-Tao-Shan (三桃山) and a Daoist temple at Wu-Long-Cun (五龍村). Upon arriving at Wu-Long-Cun, some mysteries occurred, one after another.

First of all, there was a Daoist master who came to the temple, Wu-Long-Si (五龍寺) at the Wu-Long-Cun, accompanied were two hundred some disciples, fans and his family members, from Wu-Feng(霧峰), Nan-Tou(南投). Based on the name of the temple, a Si (寺) should be a Buddhist temple, instead of a Daoist temple; so why did he bring so many Daoists there? There is a long story --- According to the Chinese culture, in Daoist Heaven all of the gods, are the spirits of human beings of decades or thousands of years ago, who had had served the country with hopeful miracles, and Ji-Gong (濟公) is one of them. As a monk when Ji-Gong was living in a Buddhist temple, he was not supposed to intake alcohol or meat, but he did. However, he had created so many unbelievable miracles; he was well-accepted by the Buddhists and Taoists, and people believe that they can be blessed by visiting the Wu-Long-Si, which was also recognized as Ji-Gong Miao (Ji-Gong Temple, 濟公廟).

Let’s ignore some miracles that happened there, but focus on the most important one. I saw the Daoist master started his service by holding one end of a string, which tied with a Ding-Qiu on the other end, and threw it toward his head again and again. After his head was bleed quite a bit, he began to help his fans, whoever had suffered from headaches, back pain, bad fortune, and so on. He was sixty some years old, had been serving a particular god for twenty years, and had a stroke for over ten years according to his wife.

How could his god “punish” him --- to serve the public with a stroke himself for over ten years? His right hand had been held as a fist for years constantly, and saliva came out of the right corner of his mouth frequently…..It was hot, so I had taken off my jacket……, it might be because I had a Buddhist necklace on my neck,….They believed what I had said, “I can help the master to open his right hand by massage it for a few minutes.”

They believed me, a stranger who had showed up from nowhere. They stopped their activities and let me worked on their master. Certainly, within minutes the master was able to open and close his right hand by 70 % to 80 % himself after my massage. All I had done was pushing his index finger outward and other fingers inward, and then did it in an opposite way --- push his index finger inward and the others outward.

At both San-Tao-Shan and Wu-Long Si, there were miracles occurred one after another; when the holly spirits like to welcome you, you can sense their existing. However, good karma comes around, goes around. The more you would like to help people, the more blessing you might get from the universe; and if you have a stroke, your sacrifice could be a “punish” from the God or the gods for some reasons.

In China, based on their tradition the Chinese doctors and fortune tellers used to learn the same, and  is a  major,  theory --- The Dao (or Tao), which including Yin-Yang(陰陽), San-Cain(三才), Si-Zhu(四柱), Wu-Xing(五行), Ba-Gua(八卦), and so on. That’s why a doctor could tell his patients’ fortunes, and a fortune teller could discover his clients’ illnesses. For example, Dr. Hua-Tuo(華佗) is one of the most popular Chinese doctors, who were able to use such knowledge to guide and heal their patients. No matter what a Chinese doctor does fortune telling, or a fortune teller does medical diagnosing, you might consider that their activities are “Medical Fortune Telling.” Now, let me share you with one of my experiences in Medical Fortune Telling as following.

Once Master Fang(方炳煌), Master Wang, and I went to visit Master Chen (陳幼額)of Jiu-Tian-Gong(九天宮), in Guan-Miao(關廟), Tainan(台南), and when we arrived at the temple the sun was setting, it was almost on the horizon. And upon entering the temple there was a group of pilgrims leaving, we were passing by each other. Then, my friends and I walked toward the statues of the Gods (you might say that they are idols) and bowed to them with respect while Master Chen was serving the last group of pilgrims.

Since Master Chen and Master Fang had known each other for many years, and I had visited that temple a few times, especially there was one time Master Chen needed me to go to Yu-Huang-Da-di-Miao (玉皇大帝廟), in the City of Tainan, with her for some reasons; three of us were invited to have dinner with her alone. After dinner I was going to say “Thank you and Good-bye” to Master Chen and her disciples, Master Fang said, “Wait! Some people are coming.” “Well,” I replied, “If they have to come, let them come.”

Surely enough, those pilgrims, who were passing by us when we were entering the temple, had came back again. It is said that among those there was a 31-year-old man, who had developed mental illness after his older brother passed away. Even some Western physicians and Chinese doctors had treated him for quite a while, but failed; so his parents had taken him to see a Daoist master in Taipei where they lived. It worked but no so well, so the master had suggested them to take him to her master, Master Chen, at Jiu-Tian-Gong.

I saw three people carried the 31-year-old patient into the temple, two to support under his shoulders and one to pull his legs up, so his legs would not drag on the floor, as well as to be able to get through the door, for the bottom of the door was about two feet above the floor. Then Master Chen let him sit down on a round, wooden chair, and everyone, except me, had encouraged him to let it out whatever he needed to say, because he had kept saying, “I need to say something, I need to say something!” He had refused to go back to Taipei, and struggled not to get on the train, and since the arrival of Master Fang, Master, and I, he had never opened his eyes. What’s more, after he got back in the temple when people tried to encourage him to let it out, to say whatever he needed to say, all he had done was to repeat the words, “I dare not to say”, twice.

I squatted next to him and massaged his acupuncture point, St 36 (zu-san-li) on the right leg, and then on the left. I waited and waited, until everyone had encouraged him again and again, to let it out what  he needed to say, but he made no response. Then I talked to him in my mind --- I will solve your problem --- on my way standing up. Next, I put my left palm on his head, at acupuncture point, G. V. 20 (Bai-Hui.)  Immediately, he opened his eyes, for the first time, and looked into mine and then walked into the cab quickly all by himself. On one hand, this group of pilgrims included at least six people, the patient, his mother, his sister-in-law, the Taipei master, the cab driver, and one of his friend. On the other hand, there were about one dozen of people of the temple at that time, included Master Chen and her other disciples. You might wonder when all of them and my friends had encouraged him (the patient) to tell whatever he had to say, why he didn’t make any response to them? And what could I do to help him? Let it be an unsolved mystery to you at this time, but wish you have a Happy New Year!

From time to time people call me, send me emails, or write me letters, which mention a same fact --- Dr. Pao! When I thought about you, then my illness went away all by itself. Why? When they thought about me, I wasn’t aware of it, so how could I help them to get rid of their illnesses? Most of these people have been moved away from Colorado, but while they were under our (my wife’s and mine) cares, we shared them with many self-healthcare knowledge, therefore when they were sick again they knew what to do for themselves. We share “Heal It Yourself” with our patients, and we wish the “Good karma goes around, comes around” spreads out the whole world.

For example, Wednesday, Ms. Willow Arthur came to see me and then sent me an email with an attached article “The Accidental Exorcist.” According to Ms. Arthur, she is a psychologist and she also does fortune-telling. And talking about fortune-telling, I will post one article tomorrow, on the New Year Day. Now, let’s see what she said in her email as following.

Dear Dr. Pao.

Thank you for another excellent treatment. Over the twenty years I have known you, and you have proved one of the most amazing healers I have ever known. Several years ago I wrote a true story, in which you played a crucial role. I hope you enjoy it. It will soon be published in California.

I felt immediately better after the acupuncture on Wednesday and slept better than I have for three months. I wish I had enough money to visit you again on this visit, but I will certainly see you again next year!

Please tell me why you think I have this problem of XXX for 7 years. I forgot to ask you on Wednesday.

Many thanks and deep respect,

Willow (hay) Arthur

Ms. Arthur came to Colorado to visit her relatives and then came to see me, but there are many more people who come to see me and then go for sightseeing or to visit their relatives or friends. They like to learn our secret, the “Heal It Yourself.” Well, in Taiwan, as a little boy I was able to go to Daoist (or Taoist) temples to learn healthcare and fortune-telling for free. As a matter of fact, it’s free for everyone as long as he wants to go and watches how the Daoist masters serve the people --- almost everything, but the major issues are health and fortune.

The Daoist masters serve the public as the media between the people and the Gods, for them either good at medicine or fortune-telling in the first place. Later on, whenever if people are sick and neither traditional Chinese doctors nor Western physicians can help, then they would go to the masters of the temples and it works well frequently. At last, lots of people would rather ask the masters for help, instead of the doctors, whenever they are sick.

Today, in America, people use common sense in their healthcare more often. For instance, they are aware of the fact that the ingredients of any blood taken from a vein should be different from those that taken from an artery. In addition, the ingredients of any blood taken from a kidney should be different from those that taken from a liver. Now, if you mixed the blood, which came from the kidney and the liver, it sounds like you mixed Mr. A’s urine with Mr. B’s. In such a manner, how can you tell that Mr. A and Mr. B have diabetes or not? I doubt!

Anyway, if you were misdiagnosed and/ or mistreated by your doctors, don’t be surprised for you have already misdiagnosed yourself in the beginning of the illness. So be willing to use common sense in your healthcare, and learn the knowledge of “Heal It Yourself.”  By the way, wish you a Happy New Year!

In the 1940s and 1950s, in Taiwan, Gong-Fu masters were the specialists for treating and curing all types of fractures, included closed fracture, open fracture, displaced fracture and non-displaced fracture. Besides, those patients who had broken their leg(s) were healed in a week or two, so you could hardly see people walked with a crutch. But in America today, you can see many people use crutches or sit on wheelchairs frequently, due to broken legs or lower back pain. Furthermore, whoever had a cast on his leg, might carry a crutch on the opposite side of the broken leg for too long, and caused lower back pain as a result.

In general, bone is in a state of turnover constantly, no matter what it was damaged or not; and because of such a natural turnover, our fractures could be healed quite naturally, too, especially if they were treated appropriately. For example, hundreds and hundreds of patients who had walked in my clinic, the Ruseto Center, with a crutch (or two) were able to walk out without it, except three of them.

The first one was a 31 years old woman, Jean, who had broken her left fibula, a diagonal fracture (not a transverse, impacted, or comminuted fracture) in 1987. Jean walked in with a crutch for her initial visit three days later. I treated her in every three days, and when she came for her third treatment, she walked in with more x-rays, but no crutch.  According to Jean, that morning after her left leg was x-rayed a nurse was surprised by the result of my treatments and said, “Wow, it’s healed!” Hearing of such a conclusion her doctor had to deny it by saying, “Oh, no. I took them from different directions.” The nurse’s and Jean’s diagnoses were right --- those x-rays of the 1st day and the 9th day were taken from the same directions, and Jean was able to walk as she used to, and no advanced treatments were needed.

The second person who walked in and out of my clinic, with a crutch, was a retired policeman; he injured his right tibia in a motorcycle accident ten years ago, in the early 1980s. He insisted to walk out with his crutch for he had a rod and screws in the leg.

The third person was a college student, who was recommended to me by her family chiropractor in around 1993. During her first treatment her lower back pain was gone and able to walk easily in my clinic without her crutch, but her mother told me that, “She had been scheduled for a lower back surgery right after flying back to Pennsylvania, which is tomorrow.” They didn’t want to miss the surgery soon before the school started again. I felt sorry for this poor college student, for her lower back pain could be cured easily by acupuncture and taking some Chinese herbs, even though she might have a fracture in her lower back.

Talking about fractures, in a closed fracture the bone is broken but there is no puncture or wound in the skin, and in an open fracture the bone does break through the skin. On the other hand, a displaced fracture in which the bone snaps into two or more parts so that the two ends are not lined up straight, while a non-displaced fracture in which the bone cracks partially or all the way through, but does move and maintains its proper alignment. If a bone is break into several pieces, it is called a comminuted fracture, it might consider to have a surgery to fix it.

In summary, our bones are in a state of turnover constantly, and they could be healed naturally, too, if you have treated the fractures quickly and properly; especially if you have learned the Chinese Gong-Fu in a traditional way, included knowing the application of Chinese medicines and dietary.

Wish you a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday! Talking about migraine (migraine headache), I had it once or twice in the past sixty some years, and how about you? I have heard people said that, “We do what we believe.” Also they said that, “As men sow, so will they reap.” And according to my experience, it is “As people have ignored the weather, so they had developed migraines.” In fact, any one’s belief is developed from some kinds of knowledge or ideas, so is yours.

As a little boy I used to go to a beach, which was several hundred feet away from my house, and took some sand to form castles and people on it. But the next day when I went back to enjoy my creations, they were already washed away by the tide. Therefore, I brought some soil from home to form castles and people on the beach again, but the tide ruined them, too. Next, I decided to form castles and people on the beach where the tide could not reach, with clay. Thus those castles and people were able to exist for some days until it rained. Ah! A little boy’s belief and creations could be changed or ruined by the tide and the rain.

One day my mother asked me that, “Why do you always make the castles and people for?” I replied that, “I would like to make the beach looks nicer with castles and people on it, but the tide and the rain keep ruining them.” Hearing of my intension she smiled at me, and took over my creations and put them into a stove and burned them; it made them as hard as rocks, so they were able to stay on the beach for a long, long time. I learned how to create the castles and people, as well as how to take care of my own health, since I was a little boy. This is one of the reasons why I have hardly suffered from migraine and many other kinds of illnesses.

Unfortunately, in America, it seems to me that parents do not provide their kids with enough knowledge in self-healthcare. For example, in the 20th century there was a student of Boulder High School, Wendy, who had missed two to three classes per week, and a patient of mine had recommended her mother to bring her to see me. But her mother thought that since I only charged a little money for my service, I couldn’t be a skillful healer. Almost two years later, Wendy had missed some classes in three to four days per week due to migraine headaches; so suddenly they showed up in my clinic one day.

As I have mentioned in the previous article --- 25) Migraine headache, MSG & CRS, --- In reality, according to my experience over 90 % of migraine headaches are climate (or weather) related, including the quality of the air, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, smell, dust, etc., and obviously Wendy’s migraines were due to catch a cold, which impaired her lungs; also she took too much drugs, which disturbed the functions of her liver according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine.

At the time of Wendy’s initial visit she was almost 18 years old, still her mother had to sign a medical record for her treatment; but when she came back for her second treatment, with her wasn’t her mother, it was her her best friend and classmate, Peggy. Peggy had wondered how could Wendy didn’t miss any more class after her initial acupuncture treatment? Well, let’s talk about a couple of common-sense as following.

If you put a dot on a piece of paper, you can draw numerous of straight lines through this dot, but after you put a second dot on this paper, you can only draw a straight line through both of them. Similarly, if a city, X, is on the east side of another city, Y, on a map, then you know you need to go east to be able to reach City X from City Y. That’s how Wendy’s severe migraine was cured with the first and the second treatment, as numerous of my other patients’.

Once I heard a joke --- Mr. A talked to Mr. B; he said that, “I have learned that human’s brain has two parts, the right side and the left. So on your left there is nothing right, and on your right there is nothing left.” Well, do our brains have anything to do with our migraines and our beliefs? I wish that your migraine is on the right, so there is nothing left from now on.

If you had over intake MSG (mono-sodium glutamate), salt, sugar, alcohol and/ or drugs, it could damage your liver and induced migraine headaches as a result. It is said that, “90 % of the headaches is migraine headache, and the rest is tension headache and those due to head injuries.” Since 90 % of the headaches are migraine headaches, so many people thought that any severe headache is a migraine headache; and some even call those severe headaches as a Chinese restaurant syndrome (CRS).  In fact, a migraine headache is a headache, which occurs on one side or both of the temporals, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is called as a “Pian-Tou-Tong (偏頭痛)”. However, migraine headache is very easy to be taken care of, and it is very easy to be cured if you know how.

In the middle of 1990s, an acupuncture student of mine showed me an English dictionary, in which there was a term, “Chinese restaurant syndrome (CRS)” --- it explained that the Chinese restaurants added MSG in foods that often caused the migraine headaches. Since then if there were patients who had been suffered from migraine headaches for years or decades had asked me, “Is my migraines already cured with just one acupuncture treatment?” I would tell them to try the Chinese restaurants to prove it themselves, on their own risk.

Could you believe it? Once there was a woman who went to a Chinese restaurant in New York with her family members and friends, and ordered some foods without MSG. But later on a waiter served her with a bowl of soup, which had some MSG in it, and after trying a sip of the soup she became panic and end up died in a hospital. It seemed to me that was a case of educational murder --- she was not well educated in self-healthcare.

In late 1980s, a health insurance company’s manager told me that, “If we don’t have health insurance all the time, I have to file Chapter 7 by now, for my wife have been suffering from migraine headaches for ten years.”  I thought that he was kidding but he brought his wife to see me the next day. I treated her with acupuncture and Chinese medicines one time, and four days later she came back for three more doses of Chinese medicines, and her so-called chronic migraine headaches was cured.

Comparing to the natural foods, MSG, salt, sugar, alcohol and drugs are sort of purified or artificial materials, which could damage your liver if you over taken them. Therefore if you are suffering from migraine headaches, it is better not to take such materials to bother your liver further.  According to the Chinese medicine, as the eyes are to your liver, so Washington D. C. is to the United States. The eyes can reflect the health of your liver, so as Washington D. C. can reflect the prosperity of the United States. People need to use common sense in their health care, just like this.

The two women who were mentioned above, did not apply common sense in their self-healthcare, that’s why one had ended up died in a hospital due to one sip of soup with MSG in it, and the other had taken drugs for ten years and still suffered from chronic migraines.

In reality, according to my experience over 90 % of migraine headaches are climate related, including the quality of the air, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, smell, dust, etc. For more information please refer to the next article --- Your Migraine & Your Belief.
